LEST WE FORGET… THE HOTTEST MOMENTS OF 2017

By Justin Mkweu

The year 2017 was a rollercoaster for Malawi’s music scene, filled with rising stars, major controversies, and unforgettable rivalries. Entertainment Malawi takes a look back at the key moments that shaped the year.

NYASA MUSIC AWARDS

Making their debut in 2017, the Nyasa Music Awards generated more controversy than celebration. Many were dissatisfied with the results, sparking public outcry that led the organizers to issue a press release. Whether these awards will make a return remains uncertain, but their first attempt left much to be desired.

AVOKADO vs MARTSE

No discussion of Malawian music beefs is complete without mentioning Avocado vs. Martse. Avokado launched a series of lyrical attacks both on social media and in the booth, while Martse responded with a single line that had everyone talking. However, Avokado’s release of Boko Halam solidified his dominance in this feud. Until Martse makes a comeback, Avokado holds the victory.

JAY JAY CEE vs SAINT

This was one of the most intense yet unpredictable beefs in Malawian music history. What started as a financial misunderstanding escalated into a full-blown war, with Jay Jay Cee openly attacking Saint on social media. Saint responded with Warning, a track that sent shockwaves through the industry. Jay Jay Cee quickly countered with another hard-hitting track, making it difficult to declare a clear winner. Though they have since reconciled, their rivalry remains a significant chapter in Malawian music history.

THE RISE OF WAXY KAY AND SEVEN O MORE

While some may have been familiar with these artists before, 2017 was the year Waxy Kay and Seven O More truly made their mark. Waxy Kay captured attention with My Foot and followed up with Zazii. Meanwhile, Seven O More kept the hits coming, from Seven C to Iwe to Question Tags. Their dominance was evident at the 2017 UMP Awards, where both artists were top contenders. Had Waxy Kay not won, Seven O More would have taken the crown—both were deserving.

THE RETIREMENT OF THIRD EYE AND THE RETURN OF AB

Hip-hop purists mourned when Third Eye announced his retirement in 2017. Known for his authentic lyricism, he remained one of the few keeping real hip-hop alive amidst the rise of trap, Manganje, and Pasada. However, the return of Abambo AB provided some consolation. AB’s comeback was marked by hits like Chikutumbwe, Chipatso Choletsedwa, and Friday Night. With plans to release Acid Flow in 2018, AB signaled that more fire was on the way.

These were just some of the defining moments of 2017. As 2018 unfolds, only time will tell what the future holds for Malawi’s music industry.
