Following the successful launch of Adrian Kwelepeta’s third album, Live or Die Story, in June, Grittah’s Camp is set to host two more exciting acts this August.

On August 11, the venue will welcome Krazy Colours, an all-girl rock band from Chilinde. Later in the month, on August 25, Mbanaye will take the stage to launch their much-anticipated EP, Odi.

Located at CCDC in Chilinde, Grittah’s Camp was once the leading entertainment hub in the area before going dormant for a decade. However, since its reopening in September 2016, it has been hosting live music events weekly, featuring a diverse lineup of artists across multiple genres.

Notable performers who have graced the stage include former Big Brother Africa housemate CO Sangala, Nyasa Music Award winner Malala, as well as Sir Paul Banda, Adrian Kwelepeta, George Kalukusha, JJ Munthali, Dan Sibale, Sally Nyundo, Martse, 3rd Eye, Deo, Kaka, Blasto, Sagonjah, Moto Buu, Groovers, Old is Good, Daughters Band, and Madalitso Band.

According to Grittah’s Camp proprietor Neil Nayar, Malawi has a significant number of talented artists in Jazz, Acoustic Music, and Rock, yet these genres often go unnoticed.

“In my experience traveling across Southern Africa, I’ve found that Malawi excels in Jazz, Acoustic Music, and Rock. However, these genres are rarely heard on the radio, and there are very few venues promoting them. At Grittah’s, we appreciate all kinds of music, but we recognize that without a stage and a platform, the music scene cannot grow. That’s why we created Grittah’s—to push things forward,” Nayar explained.

As part of its ongoing transformation, Grittah’s Camp is currently rebranding itself as a Music & Arts Venue rather than a bar. Nayar emphasized that the space is dedicated to the arts, featuring street murals and paintings covering its walls.

“We’re focusing on Afro-Jazz fusion, and it’s an exciting scene. Our shows typically start at 8 PM on Fridays, while Thursdays are dedicated to acoustic music, which is free to attend and begins at 6 PM.”

He also highlighted the positive response from the community, thanking supporters for attending the events.

“We’re promoting a lot of local artists and truly appreciate everyone’s continued support. Feel free to share feedback and suggest any artists you’d like to see perform at Grittah’s,” he encouraged.

With its growing reputation as a hub for live music and the arts, Grittah’s Camp is poised to play a vital role in the revival of Malawi’s alternative music scene.
