MZUZU DERBY: WHO’S GOT THE BRAGGING RIGHTS??

It’s day number 25 in our top flag ship, the TNM super league. In Mzuzu, it is no ordinary day; it’s a Mzuzu derby where the power houses of the city, Moyale Barracks Fc, and Mzuni Fc are set to show who’s got the bragging rights for the city, this Sunday at the Mzuzu stadium.

Three seasons since its elevation into the league, the Green Intellectuals of Mzuzu University have been having the last laugh in the derby having registered no loss against the Lions of Kaning’ina.

However, looking at the recent results of the two teams, the odds are against the students., Mzuni Fc has registered a hat trick of losses in their last three encounters (two from the league and one from the Carlsberg cup away to Dwangwa United Fc); a record that is raising doubts if they could beat the soldiers cometh Sunday.

That is the motivation Moyale Barracks FC is having.

“Let’s forget the past seasons, this is another season, we have prepared well and I have confidence with my boys, this time we are ready to upset the record. I urge all Moyale supporters to come in large numbers and cheer their team”, Moyale Barracks coach, Charles Kamanga challenges.

On his part, Alex Ngwira, the students’ mentor says recent poor run of form for his charges will have no impact come this Sunday.

“The boys are geared for that encounter. We’ll thrive to maintain the record. We’ve really lost three consecutive games, but now it’s water under the bridge. The boys have picked up form. We played well against Blantyre United and we had positive results so even this coming game am confident, we gonna do well”, Ngwira says.

The derby will also see former Mzuni Fc captain, Victor Gondwe playing for the opposite side as he has just joined them this season and will have to prove he is now in another camp.

As the battle of words have already surfaced towards the derby, all soccer fans across Mzuzu city and surrounding areas can’t wait to witness this prestigious encounter.

Meanwhile there are also other mouth-watering encounters in the league this weekend with the big one being a match between Mafco F.C against Silver Strikers at Chitowe stadium on Saturday.
